Silverstar bike park - it has berms, big ones

Well, I quit my job, and headed out to Canada to do a whole bunch of riding and then get a job. That's the setup.

So, here's some shots from Silverstar, a bike park in BC just north of Vernon. It's mostly empty because Vernon isn't really all that big, and people from Vancouver and the nearby cities and towns really can't be arsed to drive for 12 hours* to get to this little toytown-alike ski resort.

They really should.

Zak, enjoying the sights and sounds of Silverstar. AKA Toytown. The sounds, incidentally, like most of Canada, seem to have missed the fact that music is still being made, it didn't actually stop in 1996.

It may look like Noddy land, but I guess the skiers like that sort of thing. They've been developing the place over the past three seasons and it's definitely going the right way. There's a range of trails, green through to double black and although we only got to ride four or so in the day, the flavour is more natural than Whistler, the obvious comparison, with the addition of more berms than flat bits.

Trails like Rockstar pay homage to Whistler's godlike A-Line, whilst Flow is a giant loamy singletrack down the mountain, and World Cup is a new-skool DH track for speed freaks - complete with flat out jumps, giant berms and super tight steeps.

Some green, some brown. That's the trails at Silverstar in a nutshell.

Stepup. Looks small, but isn't. Hit it at about 40mph, or eat upslope.

It was rammed. The queues were massive.

Kickers to fade on Rockstar - how's your gravel cornering? There's a 90 degree corner and a very big pit at the bottom.

A view of Toytown from the lift.

Mountains. Lots of them. BC is a little bit vast.

Berm railing action - not us, but then we were a bit busy trying to stay alive at the 200mph this bastard sent us out at.

Of course the best way to see Silverstar is not to stay in the village itself, as it's totally dead (well, it was on Wednesday, everyone was gone by 5.30pm). No, I'd recommend staying with that nice Mr. Smoke of Bushpilotbiking fame an hour south of there in Westbank. The area is rammed with trails, and the weather's ace. I digress. There'll be more on the Okanagan valley later.

* It's more like 5, although some people do drive really slowly out here and even 30 minutes to ride the Shore is seen as a bit of a drag if you live downtown. Life sucks, eh?**.
