A Short Cage Mech, Earlier : Pic from www.wiggle.co.uk

North Downs rider Will Young* has taken time out to put together an in-depth review of the differences that he's noticed in going from a long-cage rear mech to a short-cage - known as SGS and GS respectively.

... [Here's] an in-depth review of the differences I've noticed going from a long-cage rear mech, to a short-cage.

I can really feel the trail now. It climbs well, and boy does it descend well! It's when you get on the twisty stuff that it really comes into its own though.

When the ferrule thingy fell off the end of the cable it unravelled and looked shit.

On the plus side, climbing ability was greatly enhanced due to the lower weight.

The curly gear cable Chrissy Boy is talking about actually improves the performance of your bike in ways other than just weight reduction.

The individual strands of wire create drag reducing vortices's over the rear of the bike drastically cutting the drag typically encountered at the high speeds experienced by the Chocolatefoot Race Team.

The 'curly gear cable' technology has been developed by the Horacek/Facegina engineering corporation.

WTF? must be a joke,. If not, thats one sad mutha to think a rear mech can make that kind of difference. Then again, there are a lot of clueless people in the world of cycling.
